Elastomeric Seismic Isolator
Elastomeric insulators are formed by a set of flat sheets of elastomers interspersed with steel layers. The elastomer sheets are vulcanized to the steel layers and usually have a circular or square section. This configuration achieves the lateral flexibility necessary to allow the relative horizontal displacement between the insulated structure and the ground. The vertical rigidity of the system is comparable to that of a reinforced concrete column. The behavior of the elastomeric insulators depends on the amplitude of the deformation to which they are subjected and to a lesser degree, the temperature, the aging, and frequency of the movement.
